Oito Viagens ao Brasil
This graphic project for a box-set of 8 books engages with the complex amalgam of industry, art and cultural codes that fed into the creation of Brazil’s national imagery. The box presents engravings by Theodor de Bry, with illustrations of fantastical cannibalistic Indians from the very first book published about Brazil in 1557. Colored, they hint towards a seamless image across the lid and base, however these do not actually line-up; a ‘tease’ that brings the sense of unease the engravings evoke to the very experience of handling the box. All 8 books are numbered, manually stamped with hand-carved wooden matrixes, and feature apparent seams and spine.
