The dishes with the titanium décor on white porcelain in the Tectonics series by the British designer Cairn Young seem like small gentle waves shining in silver on the sea. The distinctive shape of the 36 cm dish is created by means of a lengthy casting process in a mould with several elements. Only one dish can be made per day because of the long waiting periods involved. The smaller sizes have a hollow moulding procedure to thank for their extravagant shapes. A plasma vacuum process allows to thinly coat the dishes with a special titan compound. Such a titanium coat can incorporate glass, ceramic and stainless steel that has been metallized using the plasma vacuum process. The technological procedure of plasma metallization was originally developed for space research.
