NEW ORDER
Separating domestic waste, necessary in order to sustain the environment, is a task that is often performed hidden from the eye. Different types of waste are either stored in a kitchen cabinet or collected in the subbasement for later dumping. The design of the New Order reinterprets waste separation by taking an entirely novel approach: the waste is collected in a series of coloured bags hanging on the wall in full view. Boldly placing waste centre stage, this concept won first prize in a competition organised by public cleansing service Berlin Stadtreinigung in collaboration with the design network “Create Berlin” as part of the “Trenntstadt Berlin” (waste separation city) campaign. The New Order bags are made of a robust, easily washable and recyclable textile. Thanks to integrated magnets, the bags open intuitively with only one hand, turning daily waste separation into an easy task. On their inside, these aesthetically looking bags feature a functional and removable holder that keeps the actual inner waste bag in place. When a bag becomes full, the user can carry it safely with the solid handle to dispose of the contents in the outside waste container. The systematic concept of the New Order implies that this very bag can be used for shopping immediately afterwards. The dedicated reinterpretation of the topic led to the emergence of an innovative system – bags used for separating waste turn into multifunctional and cherished design objects.
