The inspiration for Hopper garden furniture was the traditional hop garden. There the plants are positioned at a particular angle to each other to make the most of the light and to make harvesting easier. This successful re-interpretation of the well-known classical beer-garden bench with its asymmetrical lines makes it seem to be both new and familiar. By combining a bench and table, the Hopper evoke the traditional hop pickers’ habit of sitting at long tables to chat and enjoy themselves. Its designer, Dirk Wynants, had Pieter Brueghel the Elder’s painting, “Peasant Wedding”, in mind. The innovative design semantic of Hopper garden furniture has a functionality which represents and encourages the to-ing and fro-ing that is so much part of any convivial occasion. Four access points make it easy to leave the bench and return to it.
