The special feature of Series 19 is the conscious inclusion of the production process in determining the object’s final shape. Sand casting is normally used to make low-grade metal objects. A template is pressed into the sand and the resulting indentation is filled with hot, liquid metal. The “unwanted” residue is then removed. In Series 19, this residue is consciously integrated into the design. The copper “remainder” forms a unique surface with an unpredictable structure that contrasts with the bowl’s smooth, polished interior.
