In Taiwan alone, 1.4 million tons of leather and rubber waste are created every year as a result of discarded bags. With this unnecessary wastage in mind, Studio Smoll set out to design a series of backpacks and bags that can be easily repaired, thus greatly extending their usable lives. Using precision non-continuous laser cuts to the environmentally friendly vegetable-tanned leather, the designers produced a bag that folds together like origami, dispensing with much of the traditional process involving sewing and adhesive.
