3.1 Freedom Memorial
The Freedom Memorial marks the site of the first major acts of resistance to the Japanese occupation of Korea, on March 1, 1919. The old brick building first served as a public health center but has been renovated as a memorial to the independence struggle. The triangular brick tower remembers those who were killed on this street 100 years ago. The new perforated brick wall adds a new layer to the original building. Inspired by the concept of layered history, the architect aimed to create a space where visitors can contemplate the meaning of independence and peace.
